The words, “I’m taking vows,” felt like a slap in the face. It was her sister, Emily, declaring her intention to join a convent. The statement’s impact sent a wave of nausea through Liam.

He took a large gulp of his beer, the coldness doing little to soothe the sudden heat that flushed his face. He felt a need to pace, to escape the confines of the living room, but he forced himself to remain seated. His jaw clenched.
